Weather Hong Kong season by season:

Winter (December to February)

Winter in Hong Kong is somewhat favorable. The temperatures vary from 10°C to 15°C. It rarely gets cold; it can still feel chilly, especially during the night and at higher elevations. Packing a sweater or jacket and other winter stuff is advisable to accommodate temperature fluctuations throughout the day. Winters are generally dry, with occasional foggy days, providing a unique atmosphere for exploring Hong Kong’s landmarks and cultural sites. Going to Peak during clear winter days seems fun, in my experience.

Winter is the coldest weather; if you are coming to Hong Hong during this period, December, January, and February, prepare warm clothes, a jacket, sweaters, and warm shirts and pants. It is not cold winter like Cold places in Europe and America. The temperature ranges from 10-15 degrees; sometimes, the lowest can reach seven or lower than this. Traveling Hong Kong in Winter, I rate A+ as the best time to catch New Year, Chinese New Year, and the Just doorstep of Christmas.

Spring (March to May)

Mild temperatures and occasional rain showers spring in Hong Kong. The temp. varies from 18°C to 24°C. It is advisable to wear a shirt and a T-shirt. This season is perfect for outdoor exploration, as the beautiful cherry blossoms bloom across the jungle area, especially at Tai Tong and other parks, and the gardens also look good.

Summer (June to August)

If you’re visiting Hong Kong during the summer, get ready for hot and humid weather. This is the hot season. The average temperature, with high humidity levels, goes from 26°C to 31°C. It’s essential to wear light, breathable clothing and carry a raincoat, an umbrella, and a hat to protect yourself from the rain and sunlight. During Summer, the typhoon generally starts so it’s a typhoon season in Hong Kong, so staying updated with weather forecasts and preparing for potential disruptions is advisable.

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is considered one of the good times to visit Hong Kong due to its pleasant weather. During this time, temperatures are from 22°C to 29°C, with lower humidity levels compared to summer. The clear sky makes it an ideal time to explore outdoor attractions, hike in the mountains, or stroll along the city’s waterfront. I feel slightly okay with a Light sweater and jacket during November, whereas September is still hot.

The Autumn season in Hong Kong falls in September, October, and November are also good in terms of climate and any festival like a mid-autumn festival and starting from this start to the end of winter.

Tips for Dealing with Hong Kong’s Weather

  1. Stay updated: Check the weather forecast regularly before and during your trip to Hong Kong. This will help you plan your activities accordingly and be prepared for any changes in weather conditions.
  2. Dress appropriately: Depending on the season, dress in light, breathable clothing for the summer months and layer up during the colder seasons. Don’t forget to take comfortable walking shoes and consider carrying an umbrella or raincoat for unexpected rain showers. Hong Kong is a walking place; most of the time, walking and using public transport are considerable, and it’s pretty comfortable.
  3. Stay hydrated: Hong Kong’s hot and humid weather during the summer can lead to dehydration. Drink lots of water, and even carry a water bottle every time. You can even buy water everywhere in Hong Kong.
  4. Plan indoor activities during typhoon season: If you’re visiting Hong Kong during the typhoon season (typically from June to September), have a backup plan with indoor activities or museums in case outdoor activities are disrupted.

Typhoons in Hong Kong

Hong Kong experienced typhoons in July to October. The powerful storm brought heavy rainfall and strong winds, causing widespread damage to buildings, infrastructure, and vegetation. Many areas were flooded, leading to transportation disruptions and power outages. The government issued warnings and advised residents to stay indoors for their safety. The typhoon also resulted in the cancellation of flights and the closure of schools and businesses. Emergency response teams were deployed to assist those in need and restore normalcy.

Hong Kong Observatory APP

The Hong Kong Observatory is a reliable source of weather information. They provide weather updates through their apps, informing the public about temperatures and storm conditions. In addition to weather updates, the observatory also monitors and reports on earthquakes. Their helpful app is a valuable tool for staying informed about weather conditions and potential natural disasters in Hong Kong.
